Ingredients:
– 4 blood oranges
– 1 cup granulated sugar
– 1 cup water

Instructions:

Step 1: Start by washing the blood oranges thoroughly under cool running water. Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.

Step 2: Using a sharp knife, carefully slice each blood orange in half. Then, squeeze the juice out of each half into a measuring cup or bowl. Make sure to remove any seeds that may have fallen into the juice.

Step 3: Grab a medium-sized saucepan and place it on your stovetop over medium heat. Add the granulated sugar and water to the pan, stirring gently until all of the sugar has dissolved completely.

Step 4: Once the sugar has fully dissolved, pour in all of the fresh blood orange juice you extracted earlier. Give it another gentle stir, allowing all of those delicious flavors to mingle together beautifully.

Pro Tip: If you want to add an extra zesty kick to your cordial, you can also zest one or two of your blood oranges before juicing them. Simply use a fine grater or zester tool on their outer skin and mix it in with your cordial mixture!

Step 5: Now comes some patience! Reduce the heat slightly so that everything simmers gently for about 20 minutes. This will allow both flavors and aromas to blend harmoniously while thickening up slightly.

Note: Keep an eye on your cordial as it simmers – we don’t want anything boiling over!

Step 6: After simmering away happily for those delightful twenty minutes, turn off the heat and allow your newly created aromatic concoction to cool down naturally in its pot for at least an hour.

Once cooled sufficiently…

You’ll want…

  • A sterilized glass bottle (preferably one with an airtight lid)
  • A funnel
  • Optional: fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth for a smoother texture

Step 7: Now it’s time to strain our cordial into its final home! If you opted for an even smoother consistency, place your fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over the top of your glass bottle. Otherwise, skip this step and pour directly without straining.

Step 8: Carefully pour the cooled blood orange cordial through the strainer or funnel into your sterilized glass bottle. Take your time with this step to avoid any spills!

Pro Tip: If you’re using a funnel, gently tap it on the side of the bottle as you pour to help release any trapped air bubbles.

Step 9: Once all of that gorgeous crimson liquid is safely in the bottle, close it up tightly with its lid. Give it a good shake to make sure everything gets nicely mixed together one last time.

Step 10: Congratulations! You’ve just made homemade blood orange cordial. Store it in the refrigerator where its flavors will continue developing and enjoy within two weeks.

Now that you have a deliciously refreshing blood orange cordial ready at hand…
