Kentucky-based distillery New Riff is unveiling a groundbreaking whiskey. Pioneering the way for whiskey enthusiasts, New Riff will release its first bottling of Sour Mash Single Malt whiskey, paying homage to both contemporary innovation and time-honored traditions.
First teased in July 2023, the Sour Mash Single Malt project’s origins can be traced back to 2014. “While this whiskey deviates from our past creations, it aligns with our commitment to rejuvenating traditional whiskey methods,” said co-founder Jay Erisman.
Since its inception, New Riff has been adventurous, beginning distillations in the distillery’s nascent stages. As the years progressed, the team broadened their scope, experimenting with various mashbills and barrels, aging their unique whiskeys in the serene surroundings of Northern Kentucky.
With annual releases on the horizon, the blend for the 2023 release will encompass whiskey distilled between 2014-2016, with ages spanning 7-8 years. Six different mashbills, crafted from diverse malted barleys and unique cask types, converge into one harmonious blend. Among these, four are 100% barley varietals, while two derive inspiration from classic beer recipes, resulting in distinct flavor notes.
These malt whiskeys have undergone maturation in an array of barrels, from new charred oak to Portuguese brandy casks and more, adding layers of complexity to the profile.
Erisman emphasized the distinctive nature of the New Riff Sour Mash Single Malt in the burgeoning American Single Malt category. “With our sour mashing and column still distillation, our malt whiskey offers an unparalleled depth and body,” Erisman remarked.
Retailing at $69.99 for a 750mL bottle, the Sour Mash Single Malt will be available for purchase in early October. Customers can find it at New Riff’s Newport distillery shop and select retailers within New Riff’s national distribution network.
